Society’s Obsession

One of the other ways we see this obsession with being forever young is people’s refusal to deal with death. For many it is the taboo topic. They don’t even want to think about their own mortality. It’s reflected in the way people try and skirt around the topic of death, by using expressions like ‘passed over,’ or ‘lost their loved one,’ etc. Once when I mentioned ‘a friend who died’ the person I was talking to, looked at me in horror as though I had said something wrong. Mick and I both tend to ‘call a spade a spade.’ … Continue reading

Organization Police On The Job

Today is the day! I’m very excited, today I get to help Nancy purge some stuff from her house. My friend Nancy is an admitted hoarder. She’s not as bad as the ones they make TV shows about but she still has way too much stuff. Nancy loves beautiful things. She has a collection of quilts that she has found at yard sales and thrift stores. She loves shoes, clothes, handbags. Nancy is always very well dressed and loves putting outfits together, she also hates wearing the same thing all the time. It’s going to be hard for her because … Continue reading

See What Licking a Shopping Cart at Target Will Get You?

If you are a mom and doubt whether what you do makes a difference in your family life, just decide to catch a cold or a stomach flu or something like that. You don’t have to go very far to get your choice of germs. Your local playground will do. Or, you can do as I did. Have your child lick the end of the cart at Target and then when she comes down with something, have her cough in your face several times just to make sure that the germs get a chance to take hold in your body. … Continue reading

Getting the Routines Back in Order

Somewhere between the middle of September and the end of October, the morning and evening routines started to get out of whack. The kids bedtime tended to drift further and further into the evening, and the chaos in the morning started to increase. From tired melt downs to kids who forgot their homework folders or lunch, it was time to get things back into a routine and do it right away. Our family tends to be more on the creative side and less on the structured side. A house full of free spirits with no sense of time will ruin … Continue reading

The Quest for the American Girl Doll

My daughter has been wanting an American Girl Doll for at least the last three years. She pours over the catalogue (that is sent a couple of times a year and addressed to the previous occupants) like the contestants from the Biggest Loser would do to the Godiva catalogue. She knows all of the names of the girls, plus the names of their friends. She has read all of the books. I don’t mind the idea of the American Girl Dolls. My daughter has developed a passion for reading chapter books from them, has learned a lot about history, and … Continue reading

How to Apply for a Reality Show

So you want to be on a reality show? Chances are if you are determined, you will land on one. That is because there are now dozens of reality shows in the works, and the production companies behind them are desperate to find unique individuals for these shows. You just need to know where and how to apply. You’ll also want to be prepared with some items before hand, such as photos of yourself and the ability to send in or upload a video, if requested. It also helps to have a lot of friends, since some casting agents will … Continue reading

12 Year Old With Autism Revising Einstein’s Theory

Jake Barnett is twelve years old, and has an IQ of 170. He also has aspergers syndrome. His interest in astronomy and advanced mathematics eventually lead him to question the calculations of Einstein’s theory of relativity. This, from a child who psychologists thought would always remain detached from the world around him. Asperger’s syndrome is a form of autism. It’s been described as high functioning autism. Symptoms tend to include an intensely focused interest in one particular subject to the point where the person knows everything about it. Other symptoms involve delayed motor skills, a lack of eye contact, and … Continue reading

Have a Merry Minted Christmas

I don’t drink, but walking into Target or Wal-Mart right now makes me want to run home and pour myself a boot of something stronger than beer. Tis the season for breakouts and breakdowns. Seriously. Have you been to the mall recently? Retailers have dumped their Halloween costumes and candy; bypassed Thanksgiving paraphernalia; and are shoving Santa down customers’ collective throats. Fa-la-la-la. We’re not even 85 hours into November and I already feel my inner Christmas Grinch bubbling up from the bowels of my being. How can I feel so behind on Christmas preparations when I still have buckets of … Continue reading

Short Term Contract Marriages?

Will we soon see short term contract marriages? Will we see couples contracting to marry for three years or five years, and then with an option to renew, instead of till death us do part? That’s the question Mick raised recently. And no, I don’t for a moment think he’s ready to trade me in or regretting ours is a life contract. It’s more a reflection of the way society is going. We live in a disposable society. Most major appliance manufacturers tell you they have a life of around 5-8 years – a situation I find laughable. Who can … Continue reading

Pre-Order Wii Play for only $14.48

Elisha got a Wii for Christmas. Yes, I was one of the idiots that stood outside in line for ten hours in 22-degree weather. Let me tell you, it was completely worth it. The boys started their video game obsession with Grandpa’s Sega Genesis years ago. (My first set was Pong, but I’m dating myself again.) That obsession has only grown. The Gamecube came next. I really like the Gamecube, in part because it has a large selection of rated E games. Then came the Gameboys, Gameboy Advances, Gameboy Advance SP (yes, they got us three times). For Christmas, it … Continue reading
