My Stove Exploded!

Do you believe in guardian angels? By the grace of God no one was hurt when our stove exploded on Friday afternoon. Having gotten the bulk of my other work done during the week, I set aside Friday afternoon to get a good amount of cooing done. Besides that night’s dinner, I wanted to get a few extra things in the refrigerator and freezer for the days and the weeks ahead. After seeing my middle child on to the afternoon Kindergarten bus, I turned on one of the electric burners on the stove (range) to get some homemade soup simmering. … Continue reading

Learn How to Make Decisions, and You Can Save Money for Life

I used to have a terrible time making decisions in life. It all came to head one week when I had three different job offers and no clue which one to take. I resorted to putting the names of the companies in a hat, flipping a coin, calling every good friend I knew for advice and more. The deadline to make a decision was fast approaching. How did I solve it? A blown-out-tire forced me to choose the job that was the closest and easiest to place to make the commute. Pathetic, no? I vowed after that to work on … Continue reading

See What Licking a Shopping Cart at Target Will Get You?

If you are a mom and doubt whether what you do makes a difference in your family life, just decide to catch a cold or a stomach flu or something like that. You don’t have to go very far to get your choice of germs. Your local playground will do. Or, you can do as I did. Have your child lick the end of the cart at Target and then when she comes down with something, have her cough in your face several times just to make sure that the germs get a chance to take hold in your body. … Continue reading

Getting the Routines Back in Order

Somewhere between the middle of September and the end of October, the morning and evening routines started to get out of whack. The kids bedtime tended to drift further and further into the evening, and the chaos in the morning started to increase. From tired melt downs to kids who forgot their homework folders or lunch, it was time to get things back into a routine and do it right away. Our family tends to be more on the creative side and less on the structured side. A house full of free spirits with no sense of time will ruin … Continue reading

Clean Up in Aisle Five!

Well, it finally happened. One of my children threw up (several times) in the middle of a busy grocery store. Now I can let out a sigh of relief. After all, I passed some sort of mom milestone, so it shouldn’t ever happen again, right? It is an event that I had anticipated with some dread. I’ve heard so many stories from other moms, who had to stand there, covered in vomit, while other shoppers looked at them as those they were bad moms, responsible for the fact that there child was getting sick in the cereal aisle. Don’t those … Continue reading

Another One Bites the Dust

Just when we thought it was safe, we had yet another appliance break down on us. With a replacement cost of anywhere from $600 to $1,800, we need some fast thinking and a little bit of faith to reduce that cost as much as possible. The appliance in question happens to be our washing machine. We just replaced the dryer last year and the stove a few months ago. The dishwasher and fridge had to be replaced when we moved in and major repairs were recently made to the oil burner. Sigh. Although I’m not that old, I still think … Continue reading

Should You Buy the Extended Warranty?

Recently when we had to replace a major appliance that went kaput, we shopped around and got the best deal for our needs. As soon as we made a decision, the sales clerk asked the question that we knew he would. Did we want the extended warranty? Whether it is a major appliance or a bit of electronics that you are buying, chances are pretty good that you will be asked whether or not you should purchase an extended warranty. There is a good reason you are offered one. Most of the time, that is where sales people and stores … Continue reading
