When Two Hit Wonders Attack – Part 1

We all know about the sad legacy of a one hit wonder – a singer or band that has one hit then that is it. You would think if you had one hit, the others would come easily, but that isn’t so. What is worse that being a one hit wonder? How about being a two hit wonder? That’s right, here is a brief list of people who had one hit, then another, then faded into obscurity. Kim Wilde – “Kids in America” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” It was a long haul between Kim’s first hit “Kid’s in … Continue reading

How To Remove Stickers and Play-Doh From Places They Don’t Belong

My 2-year-old daughter loves stickers. Love may be an understatement. That girl is a walking sticker album. (I’m not exaggerating.) While she has many, many colorful sticker books in which to display her massive collection, she much prefers adhering them to her skin… and her hair… and her clothes… and my furniture. (Basically, anywhere BUT the sticker books.) As you can imagine this often leads to some tense moments—not in the sticking—but in the un-sticking. While I am happy to report that my daughter has gotten over the trauma of me removing stickers from her hair and skin (obviously, the … Continue reading

Oh, the Wonders of WD-40!

Recently, I have had my share of household mishaps (see my articles on crayon marks and carpet cleaning). With help from some “experts” I was able to recover from these incidents and learn some new cleaning tricks in the process. The highly recommended cure-all: WD-40. When I was looking for ways to remove crayon and magic marker stains from furniture and appliances I was told to spray WD-40 on … Continue reading

Psychological Implications of Obama Presidency

As a psychologist, I can’t help but look at the impact of having Barack Obama in the White House from a psychological point of view. And in particular, on the effect it will have on the black population of the US. “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,” said Mr. Obama, standing before a huge wooden lectern with a row of American … Continue reading

Have You Ever Noticed…

Call it the anti-blog. Ordinarily, you expect Families.com blogs to provide answers, advice, a new perspective or new information on topics ranging from travel to Tourette’s Syndrome. This blog does the opposite. It includes more questions than answers. In fact, it is merely a collection of random observations I have on various household products and cleaning methods (perhaps, you’ll find that you share some of them). Each fits under the heading of: “Have you ever noticed…” Have you ever noticed… that manufacturers of spray cleaners never make the plastic tube affixed to the nozzle long enough to reach the last … Continue reading
