Hurt Paw = Sympathy Windfall

I mean to tell you, Murph has not minded his hurt paw very much. Another title for this blog could have easily been: “Murph Makes Out Like a Bandit.” That’s what’s happened ever since Murphy’s fan club got word of his demise. The Vet It all started when my friend Brenda sent Murph a care package. Inside was a note from her dog Mocha hoping Murph would get well soon, as well as a stuffed vet toy. When I thanked her, Brenda emailed me back and said, “I wasn’t really thinking. I guess he can’t really play right now.” “Oh … Continue reading

Ooh Went the Wind…

Do you know that poem about the five little pumpkins? My kids have been singing it all morning in response to our our storm that we are anticipating. Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate First one said, “Oh my its getting late Second one said, “There’s a wind in the air.” Third one said, “But we don’t care.” Fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run.” Fifth one said, “I’m ready for some fun.” Then ooh went the wind and out went the light And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight. The wind is howling something fierce … Continue reading

Our “Jon & Kate” Moments

With all of the controversy surrounding TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus Eight, I started thinking about what life might be like if we were on a reality show and cameras were catching our every move. Would I be like precise no-nonsense Kate Gosselin or like nurturing Aunt Jodi? And what kind of awkward moments would be captured for all of the world to see that would have people wondering about the parenting style we use with our little ones or actively criticizing our lives. The hairdo A lot has been said about Kate’s wacky hair do that she calls her … Continue reading

Your Special Baby Lyrics

Do you have a special song that you shared with your baby? There are certain songs that are special to me for each of my children. These are the songs that I sang over and over again to each of them, to sooth them, to make them laugh or just to dance around with them as infants in my arms. I think each baby should share a special song with mom or dad. My oldest, at seven, still loves to hear about his special songs and the lyrics for those songs that I sang to him when he was a … Continue reading

You Tube: How to Swaddle Your Baby

Swaddling a baby is often used to comfort a newborn baby who is used to being in close surroundings and doesn’t quite know what to do with all of those arms and legs that seem to flail around. When done correctly, swaddling can instantly calm a fussy baby (assuming of course that all of the other needs are met, such as feeding, changing and burping). But swaddling is often hard to get. Sure, the nurse at the hospital or birthing center may show you exactly what to do to wrap your infant up as a little burrito, but let’s face … Continue reading

Dry Drowning and Water Safety

Summer is a fun time for babies and their parents, but there are lots of dangers, too. You may have heard the tragic story of a young boy who drowned hours after he left his first experience at a pool. The story was featured today on NBC’s Today show. Although this boy was 10, the danger of dry drowning most often occurs in younger children, very often in the bathtub. What is it and how can you protect your little ones? I have to admit that when I heard about dry drowning, I had a fear response. Here is another … Continue reading

Mouse Hunt!

What happens when you combine a former city chick who has seen rats the size of small cats, a handy husband that is surviving on too little sleep and a mysterious “something” with an appetite for a 45-year-old house in the woods? Chaos, I tell you, chaos. When I last left off, I was telling you about our adventures with a mystery rodent. Let’s call it Godzilla, so you don’t confuse it with that cute little epicures mouse in Ratatouille. Better yet, let’s call it the ROUS (rodent of unusual size); with teeth. (If you missed the early part of … Continue reading

Keeping Baby Teeth

Here at the Romans family home, we have been experiencing a new milestone. My first born is now old enough to start losing his teeth. This has been an exciting time here. The bottom two teeth are now gone, off in tooth fairy land, traded for two shiny gold dollar coins. But it has me wondering, is it worth storing those baby teeth for years to come? I admit that I am torn. My husband thinks that it is pretty gross to save these teeth. This was said by the man who religiously kept almost every bloody band aid from … Continue reading
