Organize Your Wet Winter Gear

Are the dripping kittens and slushy boots taking over your household? I have a couple of solutions that will help you to get everything organized, neat and tidy and prevent the soggy wet patches that typically get tracked into your home.

Corral the boots

We used to have a small area rug near the front door to catch the wet boots. The problem was, not only did the rug itself get all wet and dirty and then hard to clean, but the boots had a habit of falling over and getting spread throughout the hallway. A good solution to coral them came from no further than the kitchen. First I tried a a jelly roll pan (like a cookie sheet with sides), but the boots stayed wet when the snow melted into puddles. The addition of a baking rack on top solved this problem. The melted snow would just slip through the holes in the rack to the sheet below. This dried out the boots quickly.

Drippy Mittens

The other issue we seemed to run into was all of the wet mittens and gloves that come into the house after a fun time playing out in the snow. I started hanging them from whatever places I could find in order to dry them out. Not only was this messy from the drips, but it looked cluttered. An inexpensive rack for drying baby bottles fit the bill perfectly.

If you don't have a baby bottle rack or only have one pair of mittens or gloves to dry then try this trick. Bend a wire hanger at each end, so the ends are pointed up. Fit a glove or mitten on each end and hang over the bathtub or sink to drip dry.

Pretty and Practical

Finally, it is always handy to have a few towels available to dry off any stray drips that fall when getting all of that winter stuff off. I use inexpensive dish towels stashed in a small basket by the door.
