After Christmas Sales

We had a lively and quiet Christmas day at home yesterday. It was such a blessing to avoid all of the rush and stress of the season and to enjoy family in a warm home. I hope that you enjoyed your day as well. Part of our day was spent playing too many video games and watching too much television. The Christmas Story was playing over and over again, so we caught bits of it here and there. Somewhere in there through were multiple commercials for all of the after Christmas sales. Stores were opening at 5 am in many … Continue reading

Post Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

The winter holidays and shortly afterward are prime times for crime. Communities often see a spike in crime around this time. Thieves know that many home will be vacant while families are out visiting, and they also know that there will be expensive gifts under the tree, just waiting to be snatched quicker than a wink. Two of the biggest post holiday community-based crimes are vandalism to personal property, such as holiday decorations, and thefts of property from vehicles. Juvenile vandals get a thrill from stealing or ruining your decorations. And thieves will cruise a neighborhood looking for unlocked cars. … Continue reading

The Day After Christmas

The day after Christmas can be a little depressing. The cookies are getting stale, some of those much desired toys looked a lot cooler on TV, regular food is boring after all those holiday feasts, the tree is starting to droop, and all the pretty wrappings are in the garbage. Here, it’s even too cold to be outside. Here are some of my ideas for putting smiles back on those sad little faces. Top off mugs of hot chocolate with whipped cream. Add a few sprinkles of colored sugar to the top. If you want to go all out give … Continue reading

For us, it all started with Christmas eve. The excited kids finally went to bed, after we heard the jingle bells that herald the forthcoming visit from the big guy in red. And as those children were nestled all … Continue reading

Commercialism and Christmas: You Set the Tone

This time of year, we are always presented with a dilemma: how do we celebrate Christmas without getting too caught up the commercialism? Many great blogs have been posted on this very topic here on Families.com, and I link to some of them below, but I couldn’t let the season go past without putting in my two cents. You know I’m not known for being quiet. In my community, I’ve heard commercialism spoken of like some looming monster that we can’t avoid. Often the comments sound helpless, as though we are forced to partake of all the heathen traditions and … Continue reading
