Preparing for a Powerful Snowstorm

snow All along the east coast, from Delaware through the New England state, families are bracing for a powerful snowstorm that may bring many inches of snow. Already snow has landed in Georgia, an unusual occurrence. Cities and states are declaring states of emergencies, even before the first snowflake has fallen.

Here in my little part of Pennsylvania, we are expecting somewhere around 12 to 14 inches of the white stuff. While we don't usually freak out about snow, the reality is that once you get a prediction past six inches here, it is time to make the preparations to ensure that we get through the snowstorm and the days afterward in relative comfort.

Along with the snow are predicted heavy wind gusts that are expected to follow the snow. This makes things even more difficult, as trees and power lines already burdened with heavy snow are more likely to fall causing all sorts of difficulties. Just last week, with only a little bit of snow, a tree fell down and blocked a connecting road, making the school bus late by 30 minutes.

We have a long driveway, and our main car is a minivan. This means that even with just a few inches of snow, we cannot get out unless we first shovel for two hours. However, with a large snow accumulation, we can actually get out the snow blower, making things a bit easier.

So, my husband gassed up the snow blower and made sure it would start, and positioned it right front and center of the garage door, so it is all ready to go. I think my husband may actually be looking forward to using it.

Because we may lose power, I made sure to get a couple of loads of laundry done tonight, in case we need to skip a couple of days without wash. With five people in this house, being caught up with laundry almost outranks concerns about having water to flush the toilets.

Check back in a few for the rest of the story.
