Is there shame in quitting homeschooling?

Due to the strong feelings toward homeschooling it is often looked at as some sort of exclusive club. The club that lets you in but will never let you out unless you defect and that my friend is like a good old fashioned Amish shunning. At least this is the feeling I get from moms who email me for encouragement when their homeschooling days come to an end. For some reason or another they can no longer homeschool but they are told by others not to give up, they can do it, or they are harming their children by sending … Continue reading

Quitting Smoking Isn’t Easy, Even With Incentives

Every year, people decide to quit smoking. This is a very popular New Year’s Resolution. Many health insurance companies have started covering the cost of smoking cessation programs, and offering a lower premium rate to non-smokers. These incentives don’t make it any easier to quit smoking. About 20% of adults are smokers. Seven out of ten smokers say that they want to quit. Untold numbers of smokers are currently struggling to keep their New Year’s Resolution, and finally achieve their goal of quitting smoking. I have heard it said that it is harder to quit using nicotine than it is … Continue reading

Quitting Diet Soda

Would you like to lose five pounds? You may be able to do so by cutting back on your diet soda consumption. Now, I can’t guarantee you will see a huge drop in weight, but I think I probably lost about 5 pounds when I quit. I have read that some diet soda drinkers lose up to 15 pounds upon quitting. In addition to any weight loss that may or may not occur, you will be doing your body an enormous favor. I have had a love/hate relationship with diet soda for as long as I can remember. One of … Continue reading

Quitting Smoking While Pregnant

We all know smoking is bad for your health, but when you are pregnant, this bad habit is not only hurting you, but your baby as well. The American Lung Association reports that babies of smokers account for up to 30% of low-birth weight babies, 14% of preterm deliveries, and 10% of all infant deaths. Ideally, you should quit smoking before you conceive. If you become pregnant by accident, or do not realize you are pregnant right away, you should make every effort to quit as soon as possible. Whatever method you choose to quit smoking, you should have completely … Continue reading

Splitting and Quitting in Hollywood

SPLITTING Don’t look at Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the handsome duo say they aren’t responsible for the split between Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman. The late-night TV host and his funny gal ladylove of five years just confirmed that they are no longer a couple much to the chagrin of a few magazine publishers who had pegged the two as one of the most solid couples in Hollywood. Insiders say the parting of ways comes on the heels of 39-year-old Kimmel’s admission that he would like to be a father “some day soon.” Silverman, 37, has long joked that … Continue reading

It’s Time to Quit: Brain Damage a Key to Stop Smoking?

I’ve heard of lots of strange ways to quit smoking, but voluntarily damaging your brain? I don’t care what you say about smoking and I don’t care what you say about the health risks – the idea of voluntarily submitting yourself for brain damage to stop smoking? Well, I know some people who went through a shots treatment to stop smoking and after three miserable days, they didn’t stop – so who knows. Science Journal In the Science Journal this week, there was a report from a Dr. Antoine Bechara, a neuroscientist, who has discovered what he believes to be … Continue reading

It’s Time to Quit: Let’s Get Together

Are you a smoker? Do you want to quit? I know that may sound like a stupid question because I don’t know many smokers who don’t want to quit, but they avoid it because honestly it seems impossible. Who wants to go through the jitters, the frustration and the pacing? I’ve tried quitting before, in fact, just a couple of months ago, I made another attempt at quitting and actually made it a few weeks, but that’s not enough – what I need to do is to quit all together. I need to be a non-smoker. Not a former smoker. … Continue reading

Are You Too Critical?

How often do you start the day with a morning lecture? My 8-year-old daughter’s answer:  “Too many!” She’s probably right. If she asks for help locating her backpack, I spend five minutes “suggesting” that she hang it in the back hall where she can easily find it. If she complains about taking the same home lunch to school every day I “propose” that she expand her palate because there’s only so much I can do with strawberries, crackers and plain chicken. When she whines about not having enough time to eat a leisurely breakfast before school I “recommend” moving up … Continue reading
