Pets and Home Renovations

We’ve had a lot of guests at the cats-only boarding facility lately who are in need of a safe, quiet haven while their homes are under construction. But you don’t have to remove your pets from the house while workers are there — as long as you’re careful. Make a safe room for pets. If you can, keep one room free of the chaos of construction. You can keep your pets safely in the safe room with food, fresh water, and some kind of distractions — a special toy, soft music, and tasty treats. If your pets are unsettled by … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Home Renovations

Most of our clients at the cats-only boarding facility leave their furry friends with us when nobody will be home — a business trip or family vacation, for example. Lately, it seems we have a lot of guests who are in need of a safe haven during moving or home construction. Why board your pet during home renovations or packing for a move? Reduce the risk of your pet escaping when someone is bringing supplies in or out. If your pet is skittish around strangers, he or she won’t feel safe or comfortable with unfamiliar movers or construction workers in … Continue reading

More Work than Simple Staging, but worth it

Staging a home tends to revolve around simple, less permanent tips, tricks, and ideas. While many of these ideas are great and really will help sell a home, sometimes a little more effort is required. While you may not be able or willing to engage in a complete renovation, there are some updates you can do that will make a huge difference in the look and feel of your home, the sale price, and the length of time your home is on the market. The key is to make things seem as fresh and new and possible. Outdated items scream … Continue reading

Making Decisions on Renovations

Sometimes, we have to ask, Renovation: Is it Worth it? The answer will vary, depending on many different considerations including the other questions you ask. For example, in a small home with a large family, you may wish to increase your storage. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling shelves sound pretty darned good… built-ins (or built in styles) are great. They don’t look so much like an afterthought, or just another area stuffed with stuff. They look like they have always been part of the place. So, should you do shelving? You may wonder if you are giving up too … Continue reading

Preserving the Laugh-o-Gram, Walt Disney’s First Studio

If you’re at all interested in Disney history, or even just that of film or animation, there’s something going on right now that you really ought to know about. A group called “Thank You Walt Disney” is currently trying to raise enough money to preserve the Laugh-o-Gram building in Kansas City, MO. Local news site Ozarks First has the details. The Laugh-o-Gram building is the site in which Walt Disney did his first professional animation work around 90 years ago, before he moved out to Hollywood and built the company that would bear his name. The studio was on the … Continue reading

Facing Death and Making a Difference

In early December 2010, Jen Likness got a call that could change her life. She was getting her long awaited, much need lung transplant. Likness has cystic fibrosis. A lung transplant could save her life, although half of those who receive them won’t live longer than 5 years. That’s more time than she would have without one so the risk is worth the rewards more often than not. That’s a lot to carry and to consider for a young woman. Still, in the long months that she has been awaiting this moment, Likness wasn’t thinking about herself, but about the … Continue reading

Renovating and Your Marriage

Could renovating be detrimental to your marriage? It’s something I’ve been thinking about after hearing a couple of stories recently from couples who have gone down this route. Let me say at the outset that Mick and I have never had any major renovations done. The most we have ever done is knock out a wall or minor cosmetic renovations like tiling, wallpapering and painting and we’ve done it ourselves. When I’ve listened to other people’s tales of renovations it sounds more hassle than it is worth. It seems to have the knack of turning people into something they really … Continue reading

The Crash Diet

Have you ever tried a crash diet? Sure, they don’t generally work for your body. You may lose a lot of weight quickly, but as soon as you go back to your normal eating and workout routines (or lack thereof), the weight comes right back. It’s a bit disheartening, to say the least. Money crash diets can be similar. You decide to save a lot of money, and for a while you are very, very frugal. Then you slip. Then you slip again. Finally, you go back to your old ways, bailing out of the crash diet in a big … Continue reading
