Frugal Living Week in Review: May 12th Through May 18th

I sometimes get asked the question, where do you come up with your frugal ideas?!? I love this question, because it really humbles me. I am by no means someone who comes to frugality with a natural talent for it. Instead, I try to work hard to come up with new ways to save money and resources and help us all be the best stewards of our stuff. Some of the ideas come from research, some from readers and friends, most of the ideas come from a practical need or experience and some just pop into my head at inopportune … Continue reading

Review: Dollar Tree

I don’t have a lot of choices when it comes to nearby shopping. That’s one of the trade-offs of living in the country. Still, if I go fifty miles in any direction, there are more choices. I don’t normally drive that far just for the heck of it, but if I’m headed out anyway, I make sure to bring my shopping list! On one such trip a while back, I ventured into a Dollar Tree store. Wow! I loved it. It’s much better than most of the other dollar stores I’ve been to, and I got some really good deals. … Continue reading

Some of My Favorite Cleaning Products

I have stated before that I am not a neat freak. Housework has to be done, but it is far from being my favorite thing to do. Even though there are things I’d rather do, it is nice to know that there are some great cleaning products available that make cleaning quicker and easier. Here are some of my favorites: Soft Scrub This is a great product for scrubbing tough stains without worrying so much about your finishes. It contains only a mild abrasive, yet it cleans great. The new design of the container (upside down with the opening/lid at … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: January 1 – 6

Happy New Year! The Families.com blogs began just a little over a year ago, and the first twelve months have been great. Now, we’re excited to kick off a brand new year. Find out what Michele has to say about it in “New Year Resolutions For Homeowners.” My article, “New Year’s Day: Do You Feel Any Different?” has more to do with how this time of year affects us and our families than it has to do … Continue reading

Your Home: Got Any Questions?

If you have a question, tip, idea, or comment, please let us know. For now, I’ll share a question I was asked recently, and offer an answer that I hope will prove helpful. “My husband loves to barbecue. The only problem is that he is messy. Like the other day, when he touched the wall outside the back door with soot and barbecue sauce on his hands. I didn’t notice it right away since I don’t use that door but go in and out the front door the most since my car is parked in front. By the time I … Continue reading

Tips for Household Stains

Here are a few tips for getting rid of those dreaded household stains: Greasy Stains If you don’t happen to have a specialized grease remover on hand, you can use a few drops of grease cutting dish washing liquid. Wet the area, apply the dish detergent, and rub the soap into the stain well. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Allow the fabric to air dry and check to make sure the greasy spot is removed. Reapply if necessary then wash and dry as usual. For stationary items that cannot be machine washed, apply dish soap, rinse with a clean damp … Continue reading

Achooo! Please Pass the Tissue

Colds, flu, allergies, and every day hygiene mean that families go through lots of tissues. What kind of tissue do you use in your home? Do you choose different types for different needs? When I was a kid, tissue was tissue. We called it all “Kleenex” in a generic sense, even though Kleenex is a brand name. Kleenex tissues are one of the lines that I buy frequently. That or Puffs. Puffs have been around a long time too. There are of course other brands, including store brands, but these two are the brands I normally buy. They come in … Continue reading
