Rooms Reflect Personality

Thinking about a room of your own which is very Virginia Woolf, a room should reflect two things. One is the function or purpose for which it is to be used. The other is your personality, especially if it is a study of office that you spend a lot of time in. So I thought I’d tell you about my study. The walls are Dresden blue. They were that color when we bought the house. Even if they hadn’t been, they would have been painted blue anyway as my last study was since blue is my favorite color. Curtains are … Continue reading

Flooring for Your Home- Part 2

Tiles as I mentioned can be a problem when things drop. Also if you fall as I found out some time back. If they get wet they can become very slippery. Another disadvantage is tiles can also make the place feel colder in winter unless you have large rugs over top of the tiles. However, the opposite is also true. Tiles make the house cooler in summer. Another advantage is they are very easy to keep clean. A sweep and wash over with the mop and warm soapy water and they come up sparkling. Color is another important choice. In … Continue reading

Flooring for your Home

When choosing flooring for your home there are several options to consider. One is carpet. But what sort of carpet and where? Carpets are definitely more comfortable and softer underfoot, especially in the bedroom. However If you have someone who has allergies like hay fever or respiratory problems like asthma you may want to forgo the carpet as it will collect more dust. In particular I’d suggest you stay right away from shag pile and long haired carpets and go for a smooth close texture instead. The other disadvantage with the longer fibred carpet is they are much harder work … Continue reading

Where are the Books?

Where are your books in your house? Being an avid reader I always find it strange when I walk into a house and there are no books. I guess that’s a result of growing up always surrounded by books and a mother who saw the importance of reading. In our house books seems to spill over into just about every room. The lounge room which is near the entry hall has a huge bookcase stuffed with books: fiction, poetry, Christian books, Australian authors, some of my own published books, biography – a real hodge podge. Favorite authors of which I … Continue reading

What About That Desk?

Do you have an office or study? What does the desk look like? A friend recently who visited our house took one look at my desk littered with papers and said, ‘I could never work like that.’ I’m sure she couldn’t. She’s a different nature to me. Some people need everything neat and ordered today before they can concentrate and be productive. Others of us can quite happily live with the clutter. I usually know exactly where to put my hands on what I need among the various piles of papers on desk and floor and if I don’t, I … Continue reading

Running out of Time

We’ve all said it that we never have enough time. You know what I mean, sometimes there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to do all you need do to or want to do. But recently for me running out of time became a reality. Yesterday by the time I had walked from the study to the kitchen and then to the bedroom I had lost over ten minutes. No, it’s not that our house is all that biog. It’s that the three clocks were all showing different times. The problem is one clock that keeps time, … Continue reading

Curtain Time

It’s that time of year. Family is coming for Christmas and suddenly you stop long enough to realize how many things haven’t been done throughout the year. I look at the windows and curtains and suddenly I see all the finger marks and dust that has accumulated. So this week is going to be a time of cleaning windows and washing curtains. First it means taking off the curtain rod rings and all the hooks. Strange how those hooks come off easily, then into the washing machine with the curtains. The washing machine will only take two lined drapes, so … Continue reading

Buying Mugs

Buying mugs for your house can be interesting, especially if working to a budget and needing them to be inexpensive. Also, a lot will depend on whether they are going to be tucked away in a cupboard when not in use or on display. Recently Mick and I went mug shopping. Every week we have a bible study group meets at our place and if they all turned up we did not have enough mugs. To my mind there’s nothing worse that standing around having tea or coffee and chat while trying to balance a cup of hot beverage in … Continue reading

Stay Safe

Sometimes when our smoke alarm goes off as it does when Mick is cooking toast because he likes his toast charred, I get fed up. The shriek of the smoke alarm is piercing. Nearly as bad is the noise out dog makes as she runs around hysterically. But would I be without the smoke alarm? No way! They are a great invention. In Australia all new homes must have smoke alarms installed. Sadly, not all older homes have them but they should be mandatory. We have one just outside our bedroom door and near the front hall. That’s the first … Continue reading
