Back in the 19th century, shutters provided homeowners with a means of protection from the elements. From rain to wind and from sun to snow, shutters were a necessary part of a house. In the intervening time between then and now, shutters evolved into more of a decorative and visual role instead of a sturdy functional one. Shutters can provide an energy-efficient solution, as well as weather protection. And the best part, is that shutters, even when functional, can add beauty and value to a home.

There are two main ways to take advantage of the benefits of functional shutters. The first way is two purchase working shutters that are specifically designed for your needs. Rolling shutters can provide protection in a hurricane-prone area. They also keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in the summer. Rolling shutters roll back and out of sight into a casing that rests above the window. This type of shutter should be custom fit to your windows for the best function.

Bermuda shutters offer a Caribbean feel while providing protection from the sun. The shutters open from the bottom, so you can let the cool breezes enter you home while the sun's harsh glare is blocked. Not only will this keep your home cooler, but it will also protect your furniture from fading from sunlight exposure. You'll appreciate the reduced glare in your home, as well.
