Simple Party Celebrations

Not all parties have to or even should be gala celebrations; doing things on a small scale can be just as much fun. Even inviting one or two friends in for a drink before the movies or whatever, is a good way to strengthen a bond of friendship. Sweat can still be kept to a minimum at smaller functions if you consider the following types of excuses for having a party or get together.

Take New Years Day for example. That is a perfect time for a celebration. Have a few people over to watch the Rose Bowl game on the tube. If you and your friends are not sports enthusiasts, then discuss how many resolutions for the new year you have already broken or some other such conversational fare. Enjoy each other's company over a simple meal of soup and bread. Go for a walk if the weather permits.

A "welcome to the neighborhood" is a lovely way to meet new neighbors and spend some time with those you already know. Make it a "drinks and hors d'oeuvres" or a "coffee and dessert' type of affair. Ask your guests to bring with them the names of trusted local service people, including doctors, lawyers (probably not too many Indian chiefs, but if you know one bring the name along) and favorite restaurants to share with the new neighbors.

Valentine's Day is another holiday that is a good excuse for a get together on a small scale. One suggestion made by the author of "Guest Without Grief," Paula Jhung, is a very clever and unusual "stroke an ego" party. In her case, she eased the trauma of her husband's mid-life, forty-fifth birthday by inviting a few women who were close friends to a tea just for him. One woman read him a poem, another belted out a song and all were there just to make him feel adored and cherished. Think of how you can embellish and use this idea. The possibilities are endless. It's a wonderful way to show someone you really care about them. So put down your cooking utensils and put on your thinking cap. The party of everyone's dreams is just within your grasp. Remember to have a good time too!
