Some Decorating Tips for New Homes and Temporary Residences

Don't have much money left for artwork after purchasing a new home? Afraid to hang anything on the walls lest you'll be forced to spend hours patching holes when moving from a temporary residence or rental? Try some of these ideas:

Glossy magazines, books, and calendars often contain great photos and other images that can be used as artwork. Add some glitz to an inexpensive frame with a quick coat of shiny paint and frame a great picture from an old calendar, coffee table book, or magazine. Art magazines are also great sources for prints.

This idea also works well in children's rooms. Cute placemats work too and many are avialable in trademark character designs and bright, whimsical colors. Select fun images and add brightly colored frames.

These are great ways to add inexpensive artwork but also to add color to walls that have not yet been painted or cannot be painted. If you're worried about making too many holes in the walls, select a piece of wood, such as a 1" x 2" and paint it. Attach it to the wall, securing it to stud(s) either in a horizontal or vertical position. You'll probably only need to make two holes, perhaps three, and you'll be able to hang several frames upon the wood. Choose fasteners that are short enough to not pass through the wood into the wall.

For inexpensive accessories, place pretty rocks or sea shells on empty surfaces. You can also pick up a few decorative glass pieces at estate sales or consignment stores for little money. Choose pieces in different heights, widths, and shapes and create a vignette.

Save and clean tins from cookies and cover them in fabric, wallpaper, or border that coordinates with other items in the space. They make attractive accessories as well as providing extra storage. Great for kitchen, bath, or bedroom.
