Suspended Artwork

Suspended artwork is a classic look that is also a hot trend right now. It is rare when those two things come together, so take advantage of a new look that will be able to stay with your decor for years to come.

Suspended artwork gives the look and feel of art that is hanging from the wall, or suspended by a visible hook or fixture. You may have seen this look in country decorating magazines. It is a favorite way of hanging art for Martha Stewart, who usually showcases her frames as being suspended by ribbons. To update the look and give it a modern feel, stay away from the ribbons, bows and jute or raffia hangs. Instead try this idea.

Incorporate the suspended artwork look by using bold finials. You can find all different types of finials at your home improvement store. They are usually used on the ends of curtain rods, for example. Add a length of ball chain for the hang.

Although the art will look as through it is suspended from the finial by the use of the ball chain, you will still need to secure the artwork to the wall. After the frame is secure, drill a pilot hole in the wall for the finial screw. Then screw the finial into the wall. Drape your length of ball chain over the finial. It should have enough length on either side to fall behind the frame. Then, using tape or a glue glue, secure the ball chain, on either side, to the back of your frame.

For a fun look, hang three frames vertically in a row down your wall, using finials of similar size and color but of different design. Paint the finials bright colors for a child's room. White finials look wonderful for a cape cod or beach design.
