Tall Rooms, Tall Accessories

When I moved into my home with two-story ceilings in the foyer and great room, I quickly found out that my old accessories would not work. Before moving into this house, I had lived in a raised ranch in upstate NY, a New Orleans warehouse apartment, a New York cubicle apartment, and a typical rental house while my home was being built. Nothing I had collected in my travels to my Georgia Mc Mansion (nickname for suburban GA homes) would fit.

The problem was everyplace I had lived previously had low relatively low ceilings and so my home accessories were scaled for a "normal" home.

I did several things to remedy this problem. First my existing home decor items that I loved were redirected to the bedrooms, and other rooms in the home that had lower ceilings. I also purged my collection of items that I was less than fond of. Finally, I had to go on a search for home accessories for my two story room.

Choosing home accessories for a two story room is extremely difficult because unless you are in a two story showroom, the items are going to look great until you get them home. For an item to be big enough to fit in your home with high ceilings, it has to be too big for it's surroundings in a normal showcase room.

When purchasing accessories for your two story room, just you need to double or triple the size of an accessory that you would put in a typical room and it will be perfect for your two story room. That means using full height floor mirror over the fireplace, or installing three mirrors, stacked vertically. It also means hanging mural size art work and two or three part triptych paintings. It means thinking outside of the box and using things for artwork that normally would not be. Try installing a standing floor screen as a painting, or a lightweight woven carpet as a tapestry.
