The Great Freezer Shut Down

Shutting down our freezer has led to some pretty interesting meals and decisions this week. My husband brought up a tub of his favorite rocky road ice cream from the basement freezer and was getting ready to enjoy a late night treat. I opened up the tub (maybe if I put it in a bowl and added some whipped cream he might not notice if I took a scoop for myself as well). The ice cream, although still frozen was pretty soft. Uh oh. Over the next few days, we kept checking on the freezer. While everything stayed frozen, some … Continue reading

A List of Cheap and and Nutritious Kids Snacks

Sure we could go out to Target and load up on pre-wrapped and pre-boxed snacks for the kids, but that quickly gets expensive. Plus those snacks can get boring pretty quickly. This is why manufacturers are constantly reinventing the packaging, or the colors or the flavors of their standard snacks in order to spark new interest in their products. With the kids being close to being out of school, we are going to need some seriously cheap snacks around here for them and for their friends. They have to be cheap, too. With summer, I can be more flexible, since … Continue reading

Not My Idea of Romance

Not so much for me In my first two marriage posts I mentioned not really adhering to or enjoying “lovey-dovey” relationships. I realized if I’m going to keep using that as a contrast to what my marriage is like, I ought to define how I’m using the term. The simplest way, because otherwise the English major in me will extrapolate the phrase to death, is to do so with a story. My husband and I don’t give each other anniversary gifts, but that wasn’t always the case. When we were younger we did such things because we thought we should … Continue reading

Fun for Grown-Ups at Disney: Epcot

Given that Disney World is a family friendly park there aren’t a lot of places there that are exclusive for adults. Today I’ve decided to focus on somewhere that, although it contains plenty for kids as well, would also make a fun day out for grown-ups. Many of the Epcot attractions I’ll look at might also appeal to some kids, but I tried to choose things that would better hold an adult’s interest. When I think of Epcot the World Showcase comes first to mind. Epcot is home to pavilions dedicated to 11 different countries from across the globe. Each … Continue reading

A Smooth Start to the School Year

It seems kind of silly to me to start school before Labor Day. Although my daughter did get in three full days of school, my senior just had two and my youngest had one and a half. Oh, that’s another thing…those dreaded half days. But that’s another story. So the kids got a taste of school and then immediately enjoyed three days off. And so far it looks like its going to be a good start. I had quite a few concerns about my daughter starting high school, especially since she was coming from such a different environment. Admittedly, some … Continue reading

Great Deals for Coffee Lovers

Not everyone is a morning person. There are many of us who require a good, strong, dose of caffeine in order to get moving. Now is the perfect time for a hot cup of coffee. If you didn’t manage to get up early enough to brew a fresh pot of coffee, you might still have time to heat up a quick cup of instant coffee. There are some great deals on coffee right now, to help you restock when you run out. I am not what one would call a “morning person”. If I am awake before six in the … Continue reading

Choosing Your Wedding Cake

Ah, the wedding cake. Probably the item most scrutinized, with the exception of the wedding dress. Have you chosen what kind of cake you’d like for your wedding? Let’s look at some of the different styles. This cake is probably one of the most classic. Each tier is set on a small plastic tray, and those trays are then snapped onto columns, which are snapped onto the bottom layer. You can put anything you like between the layers, as shown here with this couple’s use of goblets. This style of cake is probably the second-most classic. The layers are stacked … Continue reading

Grocery Shopping as a New Couple

I’m always amused when I hear young couples at the grocery store. I can tell which ones are shopping for the first time. They are always very careful to clear their choices with their spouse, to the point of self-denial. “Honey, do you like carrots? You don’t? Okay, I’ll put this back.” When you get married, you are taking two lives and melding them into one, and this is true on so many levels, right down to the grocery shopping. Suddenly you’re trying to decide what to eat—a decision that once was so simple, now made complex. How do two … Continue reading

Gardening As A Whole Curriculum

Now that spring is here, most states are starting to thaw out and warm up. This an excellent time to begin a garden, no matter how small, and teach the kids about botany, art, vocabulary, water conservation, nutrition, and so much more. I’m a firm believer in getting the most bang for my buck and most use out of every moment. Each lesson you teach your kids can incorporate many subjects, not just the most obvious one at hand. Gardening is no different. The house we live in now has a nice back and front yard, but even when we … Continue reading

A Beginner Again

Lately, a lot of things have conspired to have me looking back over the last ten years. I graduated from college in 1999, and that’s a pretty big milestone! It’s had me thinking about all the things I’ve done in ten years — lived in four different states, gained weight and lost weight, got into shape and got out of shape… you get the idea. Now, at thirty-two, I feel like I’m a beginner again. I recently had the opportunity to take part in an activity I ADORED ten years ago, and it really hit home how much older I … Continue reading
