The Cabinet: Reducing Visual Clutter

The other day, I wrote about a friend whose home is amazingly clean, even though she has two small children. I was floored by the pristine condition of her living room, until she showed me her cabinet. In a large armoire or cabinet inside her living room is a mass of toys that are cleverly hidden behind two doors. When you enter our living room, you immediately see a large dollhouse that is nearly the height of my chest. There’s a row of baby strollers and small trucks to the left, a tipping mess of books inside a low book … Continue reading

Organizing Your Photos: Printed Photos

If you’re anything like me, you still have a shoebox full of printed photos. They may be old photos, or they may be new depending on your camera preference, but one thing is sure: they’re not doing anyone any good sitting in a shoebox. So let’s get organized! (Organization is one of my favorite things, by the way.) I’ve stopped printing many of my photos. With the switch to digital, I now find myself printing only the ones that I have a specific purpose for. So while I’m not compounding my shoebox problem, I haven’t taken the time to remedy … Continue reading

I Only Want It If It’s Not For Babies

My daughter has more toys than she knows what to do with. Between my family, my husband’s family, friends, and church members, she’s set for quite a while (and by a while, I mean until her first birthday). Most of the time, she is completely content to sit on the floor and pull toys out one-by-one from her toy basket. She turns them over in her hands, bangs them against each other, and, of course, chews on them. She’s content, that is, unless there is something else within her reach that is not a toy. It doesn’t really matter what … Continue reading

How to Store Cookbooks

As I was writing about favorite cookbooks for the food blog it made me wonder about where people store their cookbooks. Some people I know have a display shelf in the kitchen with their cookbooks on it. Usually these are the big glossy cookbooks with lots of color photographs. The disadvantage is they can tend to look untidy this way if you’re not careful. The thought of putting my cook books on display horrifies me. Mine are tucked into two cupboards above the stove. Years ago it used to be one. But you know what it’s like you get a … Continue reading

In Decorating Don’t Assume

As a collector of owls of all sorts, pottery, wood, glass, ceramics etc my owls were taking over the coffee tables in the lounge room. That’s three tables. And the result was that they all looked cluttered. Originally, Mick was going to make a rookery for them. But then we saw the CD towers advertised. They were inexpensive and in a cherry color that fitted in with the rest of the furniture in that room, so we went and bought one. The tower is about 6 foot 6 inches high, 7 inches deep and 15 inches wide. It makes a … Continue reading

Preschoolers are People Too

Today I did job interviews. Luckily, I was the one interviewing instead of the one being interviewed. This was after an entire work day full of puppet shows for children. I came home rather cross-eyed with fatigue. The juxtaposition of interviewing young adults and creating plays for small children made me think. One of my colleagues is young enough to be someone I taught at the beginning of my career. Many of the people I interview these days are people whom I could easily have taught when they were very small children, and some of them I did teach. Sometimes … Continue reading
