The Four Types of Mowersby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 02 Apr 2009 09:24 AM
Gas Powered Mowers and Tractors Gas powered mowers and tractors are the usual type of mower we think about when we think about mowers. The loud engines that can be heard on almost any Saturday in the suburbs is what we have come to expect. This type of mower is usually the practical choice if you have a large lawn to mow, but they are not a green option. You can choose from a pull start or an electric start, and newer mowers do have tougher emission standards to follow. Reel Mowers For a mower that has little impact on the environment, you'll want to choose a reel mower, also called a push mower. The reel mower operates purely on the power of you pushing it, making it quiet. If you have a small flat lawn, then this may just be the mower for you. It is also the least expensive option. Electric Mowers Electric mowers are good if you still want a motor but are concerned about the impact a gas mower would have on the environment. Electric mowers still use power, but electricity can be more efficient. Electric mowers come in corded and battery powered models and are best for a medium sized lawn. These mowers are quieter than gas mowers, but they do still make some noise. Zero-Turn-Radius Mowers If you want to be on par with the professionals when you cut your lawn, no other option will do but the ride on zero-turn-radius mower. Gas powered but different enough to merit it's own category type, this type of mower can cut 42 to 60 inches at a time and is best for large lawns of at least one acre. These types of mowers are usually operated by levers and may take some getting used to. Operating one requires practice. A zero-turn-radius mower is the most expensive option, especially if you chose to include a bagging kit.
