New Year’s Resolutions – About Your Insurance Policies

Christmas is over, and it is time to start thinking about what your insurance needs will be in the new year, 2011. Think of it as making a New Year’s Resolution about your insurance policies. While it’s always good to re-evaluate your insurance policies from time to time, it is especially important to do it this year. There are going to be many changes to insurance that will take effect as soon as 2011 begins. This is the time of year when people start thinking about the improvements they want to make in their lives. It is not unusual for … Continue reading

Honoring Memorial Day at Home

When we think about Memorial Day, it is usually thoughts of the start of summer, weekend parties by the pool and getting ready for outdoor living. But Memorial Day is much deeper than that. I was reminded of this in at least one way this weekend. The long Memorial Day weekend was a great time for us to catch up on house projects and yard work. We had purchased an inexpensive outdoor teak bench that needed to be assembled and oiled, there was a section of fence that needed some extensive repair, new rails needed to be put in on … Continue reading

Fortunately, one of great things about New Year’s eve is that unlike other holidays, it doesn’t usually require a huge feast. Instead, a few appetizers will do just fine. If you don’t have the time to make them yourself, pick up some … Continue reading

The Home Owner’s New Year’s Resolutions

If you own a home (or even just rent one) you probably have some little things that you would like to get done this coming year. As owners of an older “needs some work” home, I can relate to anyone who might have a resolution or two that involves their home. Have you made any? If you needs some ideas, check out mine! This year we have made some great strides toward going green, from turning the heat down low and wearing layers of clothing, to recycling, to shutting offer power to phantom appliances and … Continue reading

When To Call A Home Inspector

Your foundation is cracked, your pipes are leaking, and your paint is peeling. Who you gonna call? If you’re like most homeowners you pick up a phone and dial the number of a local contractor. But, as it turns out, that may not be the wisest move. Sure, a contractor can tell you what needs fixing and how much it will cost you, but so can a home inspector… and he or she may be able to save you a few bucks in the process. When my uncle noticed peeling paint and cracks around the windows of his house he … Continue reading

Home Repair: Balancing Spouse Responsibility

Is it really Friday already? It feels like this has been the longest and the shortest week on record. It’s been crazy busy here with my husband and I both working diligently on a variety of different projects, the not the least of which is getting our fence repaired. We’ve been trying to balance what the two of us have both done to get estimates, file the insurance claim and hire a contractor to do the work. Wind Storms & Storm Damage A few weeks back, just two days before I had my surgery, we had a major windstorm here … Continue reading

Home Design Trends—Where Do We Go From Here?

There’s nothing like starting your new year out with a home-improvement look that’s on it’s way out. I’ve spent the last week or so discussing decorating trends. I was inspired by a friend who recently created an interior masterpiece (and she doesn’t complain when I come over and drool on her newly tiled floors). My friend is not the only one jumping on the remodeling bandwagon. According to research conducted by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, in the past decade, almost 30 million homes have been “significantly upgraded.” The study revealed that the fastest-growing segment of the market … Continue reading

More New Year’s Resolutions For Homeowners

My brother and sister-in-law are beginning 2007 as first time home owners. In previous blogs I addressed the importance of developing a comprehensive household maintenance plan for the New Year if for no other reason than to avoid costly problems in the months to come. While it is a fantastic idea to give your home an annual physical and design a strategy to keep or whip your house into shape, it’s just as important to resolve to get your home finances in order, especially if you are like my brother and have recently bought a new home. Experts recommend you … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: January 1 – 6

Happy New Year! The Families.com blogs began just a little over a year ago, and the first twelve months have been great. Now, we’re excited to kick off a brand new year. Find out what Michele has to say about it in “New Year Resolutions For Homeowners.” My article, “New Year’s Day: Do You Feel Any Different?” has more to do with how this time of year affects us and our families than it has to do … Continue reading
