Things to Consider When Hiring a Designerby Sherry Holetzky | More from this Blogger 20 Jun 2006 04:53 AM If you are thinking of hiring a designer to redecorate your home, there are some things you should keep in mind. First, it pays to shop around and find several different designers that appeal to you. Interviewing several designers before selecting one will help you find someone you are comfortable working with and that understands your wants and needs. It gives you a chance to make sure that personality conflicts won't be an issue, and to make sure the designer is flexible enough to suit you. Ask to review photos from previous rooms the designer has done. See if they match your taste. Certain designer's specialize in particular decorating styles, so find one that is a good match. Make sure you understand all the services that are included, as well as those that are not, such as having old cabinetry or furniture disposed of. Also, make sure to pad your budget by 10-20% for unforeseen expenses. An estimate is just an approximate price for the work, so don't be surprised if the finished room costs more than originally planned. Things such as moving wiring or plumbing can be expensive, so ask about such issues in the first stages of the room design. Understand that if you continue changing the design, it will cost you more money. This is especially true if certain items have already been purchased and cannot be returned, such as custom furniture pieces. Work closely with your designer throughout the process so you know exactly how each stage is progressing and how well your designer is adhering to the budget. If you are uncertain about a fabric, have him or her hold off on starting to work with it so you can return it. If the designer has already purchased luxurious fabric for a custom duvet cover and has begun cutting and sewing, you will have to pay for the fabric, even if you decide to go with something else. The best way to keep from making changes is to be sure you're happy with the design plan before work begins, so don't allow yourself to be talked into things if you're uncertain. Since designers are artists, some tend to inject more of their own personality than the homeowner's into a space. Be polite, but also be firm. The designer works for you and should do whatever it takes to make you happy. Learn more about Sherry Holetzky Sherry Holetzky is a work at home mom and freelance writer.
