Inexpensive Ways to Countdown to Christmas

My 8-year-old adores her Snoopy countdown to Christmas calendar… and her wooden Advent calendar… and her chocolate-filled Advent calendar… and well, you get the idea.  My kid is obsessed with counting down to December 25th. While I enjoy seeing her excitement as she tears open the doors to her various candy-filled chronicles, Advent calendars don’t come cheap.  Neither do secular versions featuring syndicated cartoon characters. Fortunately, there are ways you can celebrate the coming of Christmas without going broke.  For example: Paper Chains:  Kids can craft a countdown to Christmas chain to help them visualize how many days until Santa’s … Continue reading

Christmas Decorating

It’s the tradition in my home. The day after Thanksgiving I start pulling out the Christmas decorations. Then I take the rest of the day off and save the actual decorating for Saturday. I absolutely love the day of Christmas decorating. A hot mug of coffee, Christmas music playing and my living room is transformed. This is also the perfect opportunity to get in some cleaning. Because I have to move furniture in my living room to fit the Christmas tree, I take advantage of this by wiping down the baseboards and getting on my hands and knees to scrub … Continue reading

I Don’t Have Time for This!

Being sick during the holidays is miserable. There is always so much to do and not enough time to do it in. Then to throw in being sick on top of it, well, it isn’t pretty. This year I made it until the day after Christmas. Unfortunately, that is the time I had so much to do; cleaning the house, finding a home for all the new toys, taking down the Christmas decorations, getting the house ready for New Year’s Eve festivities. Not to mention all the regular motherly duties, like the cooking and cleaning, the laundry and making sure … Continue reading

Putting Christmas Away

Am I the only one who loves to see Christmas come but really love to see it go? I woke up yesterday and just wanted my house back. Everything is out of place and I want it to be normal again. I feel like such a Scrooge but I want the tree down, the nutcrackers put away and the lights off the house. Until next November, then I’ll be happy to see it all again. Usually I wait until New Years Day and take everything down in one fell swoop. This was pretty much organized chaos. Next Christmas would roll … Continue reading

Christmas is Filled With Family Heirlooms

Every family will have at least a few items that are considered to be heirlooms. Although some of those items may have financial value, most of the time they are important because of the memories and family history that they remind genealogists of. Christmas is a holiday that is filled with many heirlooms. What is an heirloom? According to the Free Online Dictionary, and heirloom is “a valued possession passed down in a family through succeeding generations”. Most families have some heirlooms that are treasured, preserved, and shared with future generations. It is possible that the heirlooms that have been … Continue reading

Tips to Make Christmas Easier on Kids with Autism

There are plenty of things about Christmas that can be very stressful for kids who have an autism spectrum disorder. Their “system” gets thrown off when there is no school. Here are a few tips that can help make Christmas a bit easier on a child who has autism. Let’s face it: Christmas is one holiday that can easily takeover one’s daily experiences. From the perspective of a child who has autism, this can be stressful, anxiety producing, and perhaps even too much to deal with. Kids get a few weeks off of school at Christmastime. This means that the … Continue reading

Christmas Traditions

Nearly every family has Christmas traditions. Ours includes having a real Christmas tree. Just any old pine tree won’t do. Fortunately I have a husband who understands how important it is that the tree is absolutely right. So when it came to a choice between getting a tree we weren’t happy with or going back later for a fresh tree, I knew he would agree we needed to go back. The tree we eventually got is beautiful. Just as well. The first question our daughter asked yesterday on the phone when I told her we’d bought it was, ‘what is … Continue reading

Did you know that the church has an entire portion of their website devoted to the topic of Christmas. It is a wonderful resource that I had to share at this special time of year! Find the link here. It is a gorgeous website that would be a great link to share with friends that are not of our Faith to answer questions they have about what we believe about Christmas. Included on this website are The Christmas Story, Christmas Videos that you can easily share with people over the internet, Stories of other members’ Christmas traditions, Ideas to have … Continue reading

Countdown to Christmas… Toys

Thankfully, my young daughter hasn’t begun her annual countdown to Christmas. Or as it is referred to around our home: “Honey, be careful with that Sharpie when you cross off the days on the calendar!” Such was not the case last year, when she started begging Santa for Zhu Zhu Pets at the beginning of September. This year (thankfully) my child is not obsessed with one toy in particular; rather, she wants a few toys from each aisle of Toys R Us. We’ll see if Santa delivers. In the meantime, despite being more than two months out from the official … Continue reading
