Tips for Moving Dayby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 28 Jan 2008 08:38 AM Well, it is finally approaching! It's going to be moving day. If you are planning a move, you have got to be both excited and overwhelmed. We made a move last year, and I thought I would never get done with everything. And of course, there are things that I wish we would have done differently. With my mistakes in mind (and also the things that did work well), here are some tips for moving day. Designate one person to stay at home with the movers. If you are closing on a new house the same day and need to be away, appoint a trusted friend or relative to stay with the movers. Put anything valuable in your own car. This might include jewelry, a computer, cash, etc. Make sure you have all of your paperwork with you as well. If you have children, try to arrange childcare in another location, such as the home of a friend. Kids love to help, but it will be easier on everyone if they are out of the chaos. Place signs above the rooms at your new home that designate what each room is. For example, you can have signs that say "Girls Bedroom," "Living Room," "Family Room," etc. This way the movers can place the boxes in the correct rooms. Have a designated area for items that you don't want moved, such as trash or anything that is staying with the old home. Make sure to do a final walkthrough of the old house once the movers leave to make sure that nothing was missed. Check under the sink and in closets. Also look up on the walls, since many people forget to pack their artwork, believe it or not! You never know what might be left behind. Finally, lock all doors and windows before you leave.
