This is the Way We Wash our Clothes

So early in the morning? Well, sometimes, but not always. Actually, it seems like the washing machine and dryer rarely stop around here. With sheets, blankets, towels, whites, jeans, light or bright colors, dark colors… it can pile up quickly in any family. To keep clothing clean and ready to wear, try these tips: Muddying the Water The best method I’ve found for ridding clothes of mud is letting it dry, pulling off as much dried mud as possible, and then soaking the item. I never thought letting it dry would work and used to spend a lot of time … Continue reading

Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Larger

While some of these tips may help free up a bit of space, they probably won’t add much in the way of square footage in your small bathroom. Still, they will help make it feel larger and less confining. A great way to make a small bath feel more spacious is to remove shower doors, especially those that are not clear glass. Remove the entire structure, clean the area thoroughly, and hang a shower curtain rod and curtain in its place. While most people close the shower curtain after use to allow it to dry, it is a good idea … Continue reading

Laundry Basics: A Few Tips for Clothing Care

Laundry doesn’t have to be difficult, and while it can be time consuming especially if you let it pile up, these tips will help you get it done –and done right- in less time. Sort Your Clothes Line up separate laundry baskets or containers and just learn to start sorting clothing as you take it off. Not only do you need to separate colors and whites, darks and lights, you also need to separate delicates from tougher fabrics. It makes sense to separate lightly and heavily soiled items as well. Another thing to keep in mind is separating items that … Continue reading

Cleaning Routine? What Routine?

As I look around, I have to stop and think about my cleaning routine. What routine? I really don’t have much of one. Usually, my housework schedule means that I clean whatever needs cleaning the most when I have the most available time. I know that’s a haphazard way to do things, but other methods have failed me. I have a big, busy family and things change from day to day. One day, we might all take our showers in a row as fast as the water heater will allow, while other days, we shower at different intervals. If I … Continue reading

Tips for a Tidy Bathroom

Some of the grungiest, toughest to clean items in the bathroom can be the toothbrush holder and the soap dish. It doesn’t take long to find soap scum build up making that perfect soap dish that you picked out look old and dingy. The toothbrush holder is another story. Try looking inside that thing! Eewwww! My best advice is to throw away a toothbrush holder that has an enclosed base. I don’t care how much bleach you pour into that thing, it’s full of germs again before you know it. Find an open toothbrush holder that doesn’t trap germs. I … Continue reading

How Do You Fold Towels?

Are you particular when it comes to folding towels? Do you do halves, thirds, squares, or just roll them up? Maybe your mom had a special method and she taught it to you. My mom does, but I don’t really do it the same as she does. I do use the tri-fold thing on bath towels, and I fold hand towels the same way as my mom, but I do bath sheets, beach towels, and washcloths differently. Sometimes, I like to roll the towels. I like the way they look, so I usually do it if company is coming. I … Continue reading

Home: Review of Week Ending Nov. 4

I decided to change things around a little bit, so Week in Review articles will now cover all posts from Sunday through Saturday. Since Sunday was already covered last time, this particular review will begin with Monday’s entries, covering October 30 through November 4. This week Marjorie, Michele, and I, covered several issues regarding holidays, guests, home care, and more. Michele and I both wondered if it’s really necessary to kick off the Christmas season before or even just after Halloween, in “Is it Time for Christmas Decorations?” and “Poinsettias Already?” Marjorie offered tips like “Houseplants That You Positively Cannot … Continue reading

Top Five Tips for Fresh, Clean Towels

You probably find yourself washing towels frequently, and if you have a large family, it might be every day. While washing towels is not too complicated, there are still some issues that need attention, as noted below. Towels and other linens can be a haven for bacteria and mildew. 1. Remove towels and other linens from the washing machine as soon as possible. Allowing laundry to sit for even short periods of time in warm or humid conditions can quickly lead to mildew. While you might not see or even smell it, mildew spores can grow rapidly. 2. If it … Continue reading

This list is a list of easy and frugal methods to remove stains and spills: NOTE: Please remember that laundering and then drying an article of clothing with a stain on it, will set the stain.
