Paige Davis Returns to “Trading Spaces”

I used to be one of the biggest “Trading Spaces” fans around. Seriously, I would rearrange my Saturday nights just so I could be home in time to watch the popular TLC home makeover series. I adored Vern Yip; wished Frank Bielec was my uncle; coveted Paige Davis’ job; wanted Hildi Santo-Thomas to be my neighbor; and dreamed of the day Ty Pennington would craft me my own wooden china cabinet. I was a dedicated fan for years until producers decided to give the show a makeover of its own. They dropped perky Paige and brought in a slew of … Continue reading

Trading Spaces

You don’t have to go on the hit TV show to trade spaces. This idea is a little different. For this project, you won’t need to leave home. You’ll just trade furnishings and accessories from one space to another. This is a really great way to get more bang for your buck, especially when decorating kids’ spaces. Your children can literally trade rooms if they like (and if it’s okay with you of course) or they can just trade stuff. The idea is to get an entirely different look and feel in the other child’s space. For example, if one … Continue reading

Newsies: Big Broadway Success

It may be one of my Most Underappreciated Disney Films, but it’s no flop on the stage: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Broadway version of “Newsies” has already recouped its expenses.  For a Broadway show that’s fast; in fact, “Newsies” sets a record for Disney Theatrical Productions as the show that’s made back the money spent to make it in the quickest amount of time. “Newsies” cost Disney Theatrical Productions $5 million.  It made that back in nine months after opening (on Broadway; its pre-Broadway run in New Jersey isn’t being counted here).  That’s even faster than Disney Broadway … Continue reading

You Can Paint Your Upholstered Furniture, But…

According to Darlene Michuad from Examiner.com, you can paint your upholstered furniture to make it brand new. Having see and article or two of Trading Spaces where painted upholstery ended in tears, I was wary of the advice. In addition, being an trained artist and understanding the property of paints, I was doubly wary, so I did some research. It’s not that she’s wrong. You can paint upholstered furniture and it will give your furniture a new look, but it will hardly be good as new. Remember, upholstered furniture is for sitting on, and painting it with general house paint … Continue reading

Turning Bad Design Trends into Good Design Trends

Some trends in home decor and design can seem hip one minute and out the next. Sometimes the trend is so fast that they are out before the magazine featuring them hits the stand. If you like to experiment and you have the means (budget) to do so, go ahead and have some fun. For the rest of us, though, these are some of the trends we should probably stay away from. Here is how you can taken an existing trend that might make you say “What???” and turn it into one that will make you say “Wow!” Bad Trend: … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: October 1 – 7

Whew! What a busy week. My family has two birthdays that land a week apart and aside from the family celebrations, we also had a birthday party in there. I did get a little bit behind, but my articles for this week are available now and Mary Ann has done a great job of keeping you updated with wonderful ideas while I played catch up. Home Chore List: Twice-A-Year Cleaning Chores (1) Mary Ann’s Chore Lists are quite handy. Breaking things down this way may help us get more organized, but I’ve noticed something else: this breakdown shows just how … Continue reading

Test Drive Your House

You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it first, right? Well, why on earth do we forge ahead, buying homes without trying them out? A house is much more of an investment, and it generally has a much larger impact on your life than does a car. Wouldn’t it be great to spend a night or two in a home that you are considering buying? I know from first hand experience that no matter how many walk-throughs and inspections you get, there are always some surprises that come your way after you move in to your home. Wouldn’t be … Continue reading

Top Ten Reasons to Engage in Family Fitness

I like top tens. One of the best things about them is you can print them out and put them somewhere you can see every day if you need to and because they help you to create motivation for yourself and for others. Today, we’re going to talk about family fitness as a whole. We discussed some family fitness ideas in the Personalized Workout for Busy Moms. But let’s focus on why we need to engage in family fitness. In no particular order, here are ten of the best reasons to make family fitness a focused activity for you and … Continue reading

New Homes For Miss America and Simpson Book

Move over “Trading Spaces” and “A Baby Story” you’ve got a new neighbor… Miss America. Five months after getting the boot from Country Music Television, the beauty competition has found a new home on TLC. Network execs announced that it would air a reality show about Miss America, culminating with the finals on January 26, 2008 in Las Vegas. (The network also agreed to air the pageant for two years after that.) It’s hard to believe that the Miss America pageant, which once was a staple of life in Atlantic City and must-see TV in primetime has struggled to find … Continue reading

Zooreka – Game Review

Zooreka from Cranium games won the Toy Industry Association’s 2007 Game of the Year. I can see why it won. It’s unique and imaginative, a good simple math equivalency lesson and a good first lesson or at least an awareness of probability. It’s also a good game for different ages to play together. My children love animals and were excited to get the chance to build their own zoo. Zooreka can be purchased for under $20. The game is for kids eight years old and up and for two to four players. It takes around half an hour to forty … Continue reading
