Transforming Your Bedroom Into A Valentine's Day Retreat

Still trying to pay off those credit cards you maxed out during the holidays? Then the prospect of taking a Valentine's Day trip to Aruba may be out of the question this year. In today's world, money can be tight, but just because you don't have extra cash doesn't mean you need to sacrifice a romantic evening with your sweetie this February 14th.

Forget about dinner at a crowded, overpriced restaurant and reservations at the cute B&B across town. You can create a memorable night of romance in your own home. With a few decorations, some imagination, and the right lightning, your ho-hum bedroom can be transformed into a fantasy destination.

Valentine's Day In The Tropics

Who cares if you can't spend Valentine's Day in Hawaii (I do--boo hoo)? With a little creativity you can transform your bedroom into a seaside retreat. First, crank up the heat (putting the thermostat on 80 for a couple of hours won't drain your savings). Next, spread out a blanket or drag in the beach chairs from the garage. Then, swap out your traditional light bulbs with orange bulbs to simulate the sunset. You could also spritz the air with ocean breeze air freshener, and put in a CD of crashing waves (I'd also have a Jimmy Buffet CD ready) to create a tropical atmosphere. Finally, serve a picnic meal with fresh fruit, grilled seafood, and tropical drinks on the blanket.

Valentine's Day In The Alps

Can't make it to Aspen or Switzerland this Valentine's Day? Don't despair. You can create a little ski cabin in your own room (it helps if you have a fireplace in your bedroom). Start by turning down the thermostat, dimming the lights, and lining the floor with thick blankets and comfy pillows. Before you start snuggling under the blankets scatter scented candles around the room and turn on a soft jazz CD. Don't forget the munchies. Spread out plates of sliced cheeses, crackers, and include a bottle of wine.

Valentine's Day In Italy

Some of the most romantic cities in the world are in Italy (I hear the Food Network's Giada DeLaurentis say so everyday). If you can't spend Valentine's Day in Rome, Parma, or Sicily you can at least eat as though you were there. Dish up some chicken parmesan, baked ziti, tortellini alfredo, salad and garlic bread. Pop open a bottle of Italian wine and pop in a Frank Sinatra CD. Turn down the lights, light a few candles and you'll have set the mood for an affordable night of romance.
