Combining Genealogy and Gardening

I’m sure that I am not the only one that has memories of gardens from their childhood home and the homes of other relatives, such as grandparents. I distinctly remember my mother’s garden as well as my grandmother’s garden. My mother had beautiful irises growing along one side of the garden. There was a giant patch of rhubarb in the garden, and sometimes as a special treat, she would give my sister and me a stalk of it and a little sugar to dip it in. We also had some vegetables. The gardens at my grandmother’s house were mostly flower … Continue reading

It’s Getting Chilly in the Garden

Is it getting snappy in your garden? The edge is in the wind here, and I know that frost is just around the corner. Sure, the days look warm, but it’s most definitely fall. If you live in a cooler climate, you may even have frost by now. The tender leaves of most vegetables do not love the cold. What can you do to extend the harvest of all of your lovely vegetables this fall? A simple cloche is a great gardening tool to have one hand. What is a cloche? It is a jar or another device that you … Continue reading

Turning Blue

Other blue plants for your garden might include Wandering Jew, which is a brilliant royal blue flower. Mick insists it is a weed because of the way this ground cover takes over, but I just love it because of the color. If you’re going to plant it be careful where you plant it though. The same goes for forget me nots. A sweet old fashioned ground cover flower in sky blue, but they can ruin rampant if left unchecked. Wandering Jew however has been known to cause allergies in dogs. So if you have a canine friend it might be … Continue reading

Turning Your Garden Blue

Here are some other ideas to turn your garden blue. I’ve included some of those that are mauve and purple as well, as they just look so great in a blue garden. One of my absolute favorites when it comes to trees is the jacaranda. They are a picture when they are in flower. The jacaranda is a deciduous tree and so it ends up looking like a dead stick in winter before it regains its leaves and then flowers. But there is nothing prettier than that jacaranda blue. I once wrote a poem called exactly that, about the small … Continue reading

Pruning Time

I’m not anybody’s idea of a gardener. As far as I’m concerned that is usually Mick’s domain. But occasionally I like to get out and prune bushes. I have just come in from pruning our browallia which has just finished flowering. Now that its yellow and orange heads are gone I thought it was the ideal time to give it a short back and sides. The hope is that if I prune it a little, it will thicken up and not be so straggly. I did this recently with a red lantern bush. The result is a compact green bush … Continue reading

High Tech Grilling Gadgets

It would seem. . .unethical. . .if I didn’t write about grilling so close to Memorial Day. However, you must know that I am jealous of all of you who will be enjoying your grills this weekend and that I simply consider it cruel irony that I must write about grilling without actually having a grill. I may go borrow one from one of my friends. With that disclaiming blurb out in the open I present you today with a list of latest high tech grilling gadgets. I’m sure someone with more outdoor cooking experience will laugh at my next … Continue reading

Taming the Cookie Monster

No, this is not a blog about how to stop your kids from demanding cookies. I am indeed talking about your friend and mine, the beloved furry blue monster from Sesame Street. He has been tamed. He’s learning that you should eat a variety of foods to stay healthy. One cannot live on cookies alone. And I say, NO WAY! Beginning last year – and I suppose I’ve not noticed because we canceled our cable service – everyone on Sesame Street contributed in some way to promoting better health: exercise, healthy eating, etc. And that’s all well and good, I … Continue reading
