The Slime Craze is Causing a Glue Shortage

Has your child taken a sudden interest in slime? It seems to be the newest, hottest, trend among children, tweens, and even some teenagers. The slime craze is so popular that it is causing craft stores to run out of glue. Slime is a homemade substance that can be made in any color. A pastel rainbow colored version is called “unicorn poop.” Some kids are making slime that corresponds to a holiday (such … Continue reading

Using Homemade Laundry Detergent

So I made laundry soap. I decided to make the powder instead of the liquid. I didn’t put essential oils in it because it smelled good already. Here is the recipe I used: 1 cup washing soda I cup borax I bar Fels Naptha soap grated I used and old coffee canister to store it in. First I grated in the soap, then added the washing soda and borax and stirred until it was all a finely mixed powder. I used about a tablespoon for a full load of laundry. I wasn’t able to hang the clothes outside because the … Continue reading

Simple Summer Fun

After an extended school year, brought about by using too many snow days in the winter, classes are officially over for kids in my neck of the woods. And by woods, I mean fenced in backyards where parents can let their kids roam free before cabin fever sets in. If you are looking for simple projects to keep your kids entertained during the endless days of summer, consider the following: Fluorescent Slime Materials: Glow-in-the-dark paint Elmer’s glue gel Borax Hot water Directions: Combine one cup of hot water with a cup of Borax.  Stir until the Borax won’t dissolve anymore. … Continue reading

Stretch It Out for Grocery Savings

You can stretch your grocery bill when you stretch your food. I do it all of the time, and it helps me keep our grocery bill less than $100 a week for a family of five. Now that is great grocery savings. So many meal items can be stretched without compromising health or flavor. For example, I frequently stretch out ground meat with bread crumbs, oatmeal, TVP or even wheat germ (if I get it on sale). Meat is expensive, so it is one good area to stretch. This works for pretty much anything that uses ground beef, hamburger, chicken, … Continue reading

Homemade Laundry Soap Revisited

As you may have noticed, I’m always looking to save money. Although I want a clean home and clean laundry, I don’t want to have to pay a fortune for the products to get it that way. I’ve tried just about everything, and now I’m trying the rest of the things. Laundry products are a big issue for me. First of all they come in huge plastic jugs. Yes, the plastic is recyclable but it’s even better to not bring it home. Then once you open that huge jug you are basically washing your clothes in a mix of chemicals. … Continue reading

Put Some Green In Your Spring

I’m attempting a greener spring, and not just outside but inside as well. When I think about how many chemicals my family is exposed to, inside the house, it makes me a little sick. I try to do the right thing and have as little impact on the is planet as I can but, let’s face it, we are all used to our modern conveniences. I’m typing this on a computer made up of lots of plastic and metal, connected to electricity and a modem, in a warm, well lighted house. All of those things come together for one little … Continue reading

Patio Clean-Up

A huge part of spring cleaning is sprucing up the exterior of your home. The spring thaw typically reveals a litany of projects that need to be taken care of before summer starts. At the top of the list for most homeowners is patio clean-up. Once the snow melts you will be able to see how much time you will have to put into cleaning up your patio. If your patio weathered the harsh winter well, then clean-up will be minimal. Usually you will have to sweep up a few spots using a stiff bristle broom, but that’s about it. … Continue reading
