A Grand Halloween Entrance

For a long time, there was an amazing Halloween house down the street. Every year on the stroke of the day before Halloween, the people who lived there would unload a piece of fabric as large as the front of their house and drape it from top to bottom, making the entire home look like a castle. From black lights to a giant skeleton superimposed on the tree across the street, their house was outstanding and no one could compete. Sadly, they moved away last year. However, their Halloween shenanigans inspired me to do more with my house on Halloween. … Continue reading

Wacky Halloween Pumpkins

Pumpkins, pumpkins, who’s got pumpkins? Not me yet, but next weekend we will be traipsing off to the pumpkin farm to enjoy some lovely fall orangeness. We don’t decorate our pumpkins in early October, but we do collect them and mull over ideas of how to decorate them! How can you get creative with your pumpkins this year? If you have toddlers or preschoolers, get them into the action by making painted pumpkins. Carve them or leave them whole, then let the little ones loose on the pumpkins. Create weird lighting effects by adding glow sticks to the inside of … Continue reading

First, think food. Fall food is beautiful. Squashes, apples, and even lovely and durable pears like the Bosc pear make good table decorations. Yes, you can eat them each week and add more … Continue reading

A Festive Fall Entryway

Ah, fall. I love fall, although here the crisp scent of fallen leaves is often replaced by the pounding sedative sound of the rain. But I enjoy both the leaves and the rain, and I like to celebrate fall with seasonal decorations. Although Halloween is quite far away, we’ve pulled out our fall decorations with abandon. It was the fall equinox last Friday, so this gives us a free pass, right? One of my favorite seasonal decoration is a wooden wreath. I purchased the wreath at a craft store some time ago, and I wound strands of artificial fall leaves … Continue reading

Spider Crafts for Preschoolers

Tis the season for spooky spider crafts! Halloween is a great time to talk about spiders and other “scary” animals with your preschooler. Make a spider sandwich. Take two oval-shaped cookies and sandwich icing and thin licorice strings in the center. Four licorice strings on each side and you get bonus points for being anatomically accurate, since spiders have eight legs. Gummies are good for eyes. Or if you’re looking for a healthier alternative, use a cookie cutter to make circular sandwiches with flat fillings like cream cheese. Place the sandwich in the middle of the plate and make lines … Continue reading
