Warning to Kitchen Sink Fashion Victimsby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 22 Jan 2008 01:33 PM
Let's take a look at sinks. In all of the design magazines, from Martha Stewart to Architectural Digest, I have been seeing a new sort of sink. It is the farm style sink with an overlap. It is a large boxy sink set into the counter with the front lip appearing to spill over the side. I usually see this type of sink in white. I am leery of it as a fad instead of a true trend. It creates a definite look that may fall out of style. Stainless steel sinks on the other hand seem like a good investment. They are easy to clean and give an upscale look. They have also been around for quite some time. Single, double and triple sinks are among the choices that are available. Above-the-counter or vessel sinks are a definite fad. There is no doubt in my mind here. These are sinks that look as though you have a glass bowl sitting on top of the counter. While they are nice to look at, they aren't very practical. They must be kept super clean, and they have that definite look of the moment. Sales on these types of sinks once-high-end are plummeting, and manufactures are slipping over to wet-surface sinks in which water cascades over a flat surface, completely impractical for a kitchen. It is brilliant marketing to make something so expensive and practical in your home.. faddish. By doing this you end up replacing your perfectly working appliances, sinks, floors, ect.. way too often. These are things that should last for decades.. and companies want you not to use them that long, because they are missing out on sales if you use your appliances and things until they actually REALLY need replacing.
