Washing Blankets

Washing blankets and quilts can be an interesting exercise. Many washing machines are not designed to take more than one blanket at a time so washing blankets and quilts can be a time consuming process, especially if you or your spouse is one of those people who is a blanket snuggler and likes two or three blankets on top of them at night. The blanket situation is not such a major hassle in our house. For starters, I have a large washing machine. Secondly, we rarely have a blanket on the bed. In winter we will have a quilt on … Continue reading

New Uses for Old Baby Blankets

Well, it looks like everyone is mostly over the stomach flu. I’m spending the day catching up on all of the normal laundry that had to be pushed aside for all of the blankets, towels and clothes that needed immediate washing during the illness. I’m also spending some of the day on those little things that need to be done, such as putting away the bassinet that Henry, now at six months old, is much to big to use. Under the bassinet, in its basket, I found a bunch of baby blankets. They are the small flannel type ones that … Continue reading

Crib Bumpers Are Dangerous

Crib bumpers are decorative. They help make a baby’s crib look softer, warmer, and more visually appealing. Unfortunately, crib bumpers can also be dangerous. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents not use any crib bumpers at all. The AAP has a lot of great advice for parents. Follow that advice, and you can help to keep your baby safe. Many parents have heard the “back to sleep” advice from the AAP. The simple phrase makes it easy for parents to remember to place their baby on his or her back for sleep – and to do that … Continue reading

Organizing Baby’s Closet

One of my most dreaded tasks as a parent is dealing with clothes. I hate washing, folding, and putting them away, but I also hate the inevitable rotation that is required for baby clothes. They outgrow stuff so quickly, that it seems I am constantly organizing, and re-organizing baby clothes. What makes this task even more daunting is when you feel compelled to hang on to baby’s clothes in the event you might have another baby of the same sex. It all just exhausts me. I recently had to clean out my baby’s very tiny closet. We don’t have a … Continue reading

Laundry Tips for Saving Money

Most of us are trying to save money any way we can. One area that you may not have considered when it comes to this is your laundry. So here are some tips that may help save you some cash. It could also make the task of laundry more manageable. The first tip is to wash less. The average top-loading washing machine uses about 40 gallons of water. Even though front-loading machines use less (between 10 and 24 gallons), it is still a waste of money to put in smaller loads. You can save not only the use of your … Continue reading

There’s No Place Like Home

I recently read an article called What Does Home Mean To You. It was a collection of short paragraphs by a bunch of different people giving their definition of home. Not one single person mentioned clean floors, dusted shelves or sparkling mirrors. Every paragraph was the feeling they get from being home. It’s not even necessarily a physical space, for some people it’s where ever their spouse or children are, for still others it’s Mom and Dad. What says home to you? Although I would like to say a clean house, it’s really not. Home to me is anywhere my … Continue reading

Tummy Troubles

Last night I was reminded how hard it is to be a single mother of a toddler. I kept my friend’s three year old over night. I love spending time with this little girl, we played games and watched movies. In the middle of the night I heard a noise, it was sweet little Ivy, she had thrown up in her bed. Now if there are two parents one of them can clean up the child while the other ones strips the bed. Since there was only me, I cleaned Ivy up and tucked her into my bed. By that … Continue reading

Comfy Critters for a Comfy Christmas

Every year you search for gifts that delight yet have staying power. No one wants to spend a large amount of money on a gift a child will forget he has in a few months or worse by New Year’s Day. My children get so many things during Christmas that it is easy to forget all they received. Even they have a hard time remembering all their gifts. The trick is finding a gift that has staying power. The gift they will love for years to come. Even better is finding a gift with staying power that does not bust … Continue reading

Nursery Ideas

It all began one warm summer day as I was washing sheets from the three beds in our home; our queen, the guest/our son’s full, and the crib. I started thinking about ways to make the kid’s bedroom work for both our son and our unborn daughter. Around the time that my husband and I were planning our wedding, I read an article about using white bed linens and towels not only for ease of washing but also for simplicity and cohesion. Needless to say, I did not purchase white bed linens or towels. With multiple moves and rearrangement of … Continue reading
