Festive Fourth Fun

If you don’t own festive Fourth of July clothing, then you haven’t been to Old Navy this month. Walking into the popular chain store is like being swallowed by a giant Patriotic Fruit Pizza. Red, white and blue shirts, shorts and sandals with bits of Americana emblazoned on them are everywhere. What’s more, Old Navy is running a Buy Two; Get the Third Item Free sale all weekend long, so if you are still in need of Independence Day-themed gear to wear to fun-filled Fourth of July festivals, parades or parties, you know where to shop. Celebrate the Fourth Disney Style

Sometimes it feels like almost all I’m ever doing around here is talking about things going on at Disney World. But the amusement park just keeps holding so many special events; I’d feel remiss if I didn’t share the news with my fellow Disney enthusiasts, especially those lucky enough to make summer trips to Orlando (or Anaheim). Because we’re heading into the Fourth of July weekend today, I thought I’d share with everyone the details of what Disney World’s doing for its Independence Day celebrations. Disneyland really needs to start posting announcements as frequently on its web site as Disney … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Annual Fourth of July Ward Breakfast

The annual Fourth of July breakfast is a staple among ward activities. I have been to many different wards annual breakfasts, and the events vary from location to location. The best food was sausage (the big fat ones (more like a Polish hot dog) that were sliced) along with the pancakes and the other usual fare. The worst was the watermelon served along side the pancakes and syrup. In fact it has become a running joke with the people that attended that particular breakfast. And the most unique is the “bring your own box of cereal” breakfast—last two years in … Continue reading

Shooting Fourth of July Fireworks—Lenses and Settings

Now that you know where to shoot and what to bring along, let’s discuss some other factors that you should keep in mind while documenting your local Fourth of July fireworks display. LENSES Simply put, wider is better. Without a doubt a wide-angle lens works better for fireworks photography. If you can get your hands on a 20mm to 35mm lens, for example, you will increase your field of view and have better luck capturing the full effect of the entire explosion. Conversely, a lens that’s too long (80mm to 200mm) will almost certainly limit how much you capture in … Continue reading

Some Simple Ideas for Fourth of July

Teach Your Children About Their Heritage

July is a great month to focus on your heritage. It is so easy to teach your children about their heritage and family history in conjunction with the Fourth of July and Pioneer Day at church. You could focus your family home evening lessons around the founding of our country at the beginning of this month and then mid-month talk about the pioneer heritage of the church. You can share with your children the conversion stories of the first members of the church in your family. If you are the first member then you are a pioneer and you can … Continue reading
