red fridge Sometimes appliances can be inherited, such as when you buy your home. In that case, the color of the appliances are determined beforehand. Often when an appliance needs to be replaced, you stick with the same colors that you already have. But be aware that the color of your appliances an dictate any future upgrades to your kitchen, unless of course you are willing to install all new appliances, which can be costly.

When we first moved into our current home, we needed a refrigerator. We decided to go with white, probably because we were so overwhelmed with all that needed to be done in the house, and we were used to white. A few weeks later, the dishwasher had to be replaced, and so we went with white again. Now we are looking at different designs to update our kitchen, and the white just won't go with what we were thinking. So, we will either need to look to changing the appliances or changing our design. So what designs go with what color appliances? Here is a quick guide.

White appliances generally call for light cabinetry and floors. Bright white, cream or a pale yellow will work with white. For drama, you can add a dark countertop. although you may be safer with a light or neutral countertop. Trendy cabinet colors such as jewel toned blue or green will also work with bright white, although with a trend, you may soon be replacing the colors, anyway.

Black appliances generally call for warmer colors and deeper, richer cabinetry. Cherry or cinnamon cabinets would look amazing against black appliances. Rich granite countertops with veins of brown, dark red, dark orange or cinnamon would all work well.

Stainless steel appliances are considered a neutral color and can work with pretty much any design, although stainless steel is usually seen with rich, dark colors. The downside to stainless steel is the difficulty in cleaning. It is the most designed type of appliance in resale of a home.
