Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

What to Bring to a Fourth of July Parade 2

Are you all ready for your Fourth of July celebrations? I hope that you get the opportunity to visit a community parade. I’ve been sharing some items for items to bring to the parade to enhance the experience. Small candies: Small candies are great to have on hand to share with your parade neighbors. A secret stash of candy also helps if your children don’t happen to catch any of the candy that is thrown from the parade. Last year, we were at the end of the route and the candy from the floats had all been used up before … Continue reading

What to Bring to a Fourth of July Parade

Every year, we try to hit at least one fourth of July parade. These parades are fun and really give us both a sense of patriotism and community. In our old neck of the woods, when we lived in our smaller home with the postage-stamp yard, the town Independence Day parade went right past our home, literally. We simply got some lawn chairs out and pulled them up to the sidewalk before the parade started. Our neighbors would do the same. One neighbor always hands out Italian ice (or water ice as it is called here in Pennsylvania), while another … Continue reading

For Babies Born on the 4th of July

Congratulations to all the new moms and dads out there who are celebrating a new addition to their families today on the 4th of July. Since there are babies born every day of the year, it is hardly surprising that many children are born on the 4th of July. Any birth day is a great day for parents and children and the 4th of July presents a few challenges, but also a great many treats. Nationwide Celebrations There are only a handful of days during the year where the entire nation celebrates in such a fashion that your baby will … Continue reading

Help Your Child Cope With Fireworks Displays

Traditionally, the way to celebrate the Fourth of July is to observe a loud, colorful, fireworks display. Kids with certain types of special needs may have difficulty coping with what many adults see as an enjoyable form of entertainment. Here are some tips parents can use to help their child cope with the sensory aspects of Independence Day. The Fourth of July might very well be the loudest holiday of the entire year. We have bright and booming fireworks displays at night, and start the day with the screaming sirens of fire engines in the Independence Day parade. This can … Continue reading

The Windmill

Some days are more interesting than others. Some objects are more interesting than others. In a world increasingly taken over by computers and screens (something I’m not opposed to) there remain simple toys and simple pleasures that can inspire the imagination and teach concepts far better than any interactive video ever could (especially for children young enough to be struggling with language). When we lived in Texas one of the primary things you needed in a home was a ceiling fan. The heat was very hot and a little moving air could work wonders. Since we lived in a rather … Continue reading

Are Your Kids Afraid of Fireworks?

How many of you plan to pack up the kids and head out to your city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show tonight? If you have a young child like mine, you might be considering an alternative plan. When my daughter was a toddler we did the whole Independence Day celebration u-rah-rah complete with a picnic at the local park, sparklers and patriotic attire. If you live in a small community, then you know prime fireworks seats go fast. Fast, as in, if you don’t have your spot secured with police tape (or barbed wire), blankets and coolers, at least … Continue reading
