Is Your Toddler Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Probably not… at least according to medical experts. A new study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine reveals that at least 40% of American infants and toddlers aren’t getting enough vitamin D. What’s more, the study also found that there has been an increase in the number of rickets (a vitamin D deficiency disease) cases in several states in the last few years. Doctors say millions of American children are vitamin D deficient and that number is likely to increase if parents don’t start adjusting their kids’ diet or modifying their schedules to allow toddlers to spend … Continue reading

Medicine Cabinets and Toddlers

What’s in your medicine cabinet? If you have a toddler, the American Academy of Pediatrics has a list of items you should have stocked in your medicine cabinet, including: Thermometer: Pediatricians recommend that you invest in a rectal thermometer, as it provides the most accurate readings. However, most doctors also realize that many parents are weary of using one, so they suggest taking your toddler’s temperature in a way that you feel most comfortable. Be warned, though, digital ear thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. What’s more, trying to cajole a sick tot into holding an oral thermometer under his tongue or … Continue reading

Sunscreen Dump

Tis the season to clean out the medicine cabinet. Well, at least in my home. End of the summer sales on things like sunscreen, band-aids, and topical ointments serve as the impetus for my annual cleaning. However, this year I’m being extra careful about replacing my old sunscreens with the ones on clearance. A few weeks ago I received an email about sunscreen hazards. According to the Environmental Working Group, some sunscreens can be harmful to your health. The group maintains that the majority of sunscreens on the market shouldn’t be used on adults or children because they contain two … Continue reading

Five Ways to Save Money on Prescription Medication

Even with insurance that covers prescriptions, medication can be expensive. Here are some tips to help you save a little money on your prescriptions! Money saving tip number one: Go generic! Many name brand medications are now available in a generic form. Generic medications are tested for safety and ability to treat diseases the same way name brand medications are. They work the same… for a LOT less. For example: my name brand Zoloft used to cost around $90 per month (without insurance). The generic version cost less than half that when I first made the switch. If you do … Continue reading

Toddlers and Lyme Disease

Tis the season to be looking for deer ticks. Now is the time to educate yourself about the dangers of Lyme disease, so your toddler’s romp in the woods doesn’t end up in a trip to the hospital. Lyme disease is an extremely painful condition that can affect a person’s skin, joints, nervous system, and other organs. Symptoms, and their severity, can vary from person to person, but if left untreated the disease can prove deadly. Contrary to popular belief, Lyme disease is not transmitted from person to person, and the risk of a child contracting the disease is minimal, … Continue reading

High-Tech Bathrooms

We’ve all heard of high-tech kitchens, but not very many homeowners think of integrating advanced technology in the smallest room in the house-—the bathroom. I will be the first to admit that when I stroll through design showrooms I tend to gravitate towards new products for the kitchen and larger living areas. What’s more, when I travel to hotels and run across a product that makes washing up safer and more comfortable I rarely consider installing it in my own home (in most cases I figure it’s a luxury I can’t afford). The following are some of my favorite high-tech … Continue reading

Home Monitoring Systems For The Sick Or Elderly

I am very blessed to still have my grandparents in my life. However, they are no longer spring chickens and they are often the source of worry for me (and my parents who live a few miles away from them). The fact is, whether you live in the same house as your elderly loved ones or thousands of miles away (like I do), their health and well being is likely a major concern. Which is why I instantly fell in love with a new product that allows you to monitor mom and dad or grandma and grandpa from your own … Continue reading

Organizing “Problem Areas”

Last night, I dreamt of owning a bulldozer. I had contemplated using one on my daughter’s playroom the other day, so I’m sure it was just an offshoot of my subconscious. It may sound ridiculous, but it was the only tool I could think of that would accommodate the task of singularly scooping up all of the toys that lay strewn on the floor. The room looked like a toy-eating dragon regurgitated his five-course meal on the floor. Just looking at the mess made me want to curl up on the floor and fall asleep (I very well would have, … Continue reading
