Do you know what to expect when you hear all of those winter weather terms? Understanding what it all means can keep you and your family safe from harm when severe weather hits your area.

We are up to part three of the winter weather terms. This is the final five weather terms that you should know.

Sleet

Sleet is frozen or partially frozen rain that comes down to the Earth in the form of small ice pellets. The ice pellets hit the ground so fast that they actually bounce instead of stick. However, sleet can accumulate on the ground, like snow, causing the roadways to be hazardous. You can also slip and fall when walking.

Freezing Rain

Many people confuse freezing rain and sleet. Sleet comes down in the form of ice, while freezing rain hits the ground as rain and then freezes when it comes in contact with the cold temperatures on the ground. This is a very dangerous condition because it can quickly form a slick layer of ice on the ground. The smooth ice coating is called a glaze.

Ice Storm Warning

If you hear of an ice storm warning, the best thing to do is to be prepared to stay indoors and get ready in case you lose power or your phone. an ice Storm Warning is issued when freezing rain is expected to reach an accumulation of one-half-inch or more. This ice accumulation is not only dangerous for traveling, but it can also cause trees and power lines to fall down.

Wind-chill Advisory

A Wind-chill Advisory is issued when windchill temperatures, the temperature that your skin feels because of the cold and the wind, are expected to be between -20 degrees and -34 degrees. It is important to cover up and protect yourself if you are outside. Avois being outside for a prolonged period.

Wind-chill Warning

A Wind-chill warning is issued when wind-chill temperatures are expected to be below -34 degrees. Everyone should stay indoors in a warm place.
