Master Bedroom Renovation

It’s time for me to get working on the renovation of the master bedroom. My biggest problem is that I’m a flutterer. I flutter here and there, knock out a wall in this room, paint the ceiling in that room, rip out carpet in another room. There is no method to my madness, instead of having a plan, I do whatever moves me at that particular time. Which ultimately means, nothing gets finished. This renovation is going to be different. I am going to create a battle plan, and then I will break it down into steps and check those … Continue reading

Deep Clean Your Spring

With more than a foot of semi-fresh snow on the ground, it certainly doesn’t feel like spring in my neck of the woods. Still, with March coming to a close and summer right around the corner, I know I should get cracking on my spring cleaning to-do list. While I have tackled some minor chores, I still have a ton of deep-cleaning to do. While most of us clean on a regular basis, there are some tasks that require more than just a quick disinfecting. Spring is one of the seasons that prompt people to really get serious about cleaning. … Continue reading

Post Holiday Deep Clean

Christmas has come and gone, and by now your guests have left their mark on your home. If they’re still around, then you might want to postpone reading the rest of this blog. However, if you are finally guest-free then read on as I have a number of great tips to get your home back to its squeaky clean goodness in no time: Start with the refrigerator. Post holiday cleaning begs for heavy-duty decluttering, especially if your frig was used as a dumping ground in the last few days. First, throw out all old food. Next, dip a sponge in … Continue reading

Battling Pet Hair

My cousin’s home has hardwood floors, but part of the sealer coat is uneven in an area near the front hall. The semi-sharp edge is where you can typically find a wad of dog hair just about every day. Once he finds the time to reapply sealer in the affected area, I’m sure the dog’s hair won’t get caught there, but until then guests are forced to walk around or (GASP!) on a furball as they make their way to the living room. Being the Dyson lover that I am, I recommended that my cousin purchase a Dyson Pet Vacuum … Continue reading

Having Peace of Mind During Home Repairs

If you have been following my saga, you know I had to have my entire roof replaced because of a hailstorm followed by torrential downpours in Georgia. While the insurance company approved the repairs, the mortgage company held onto the money for 6 months just because they could. This meant more damage and more work to be done. We had the roof fixed a couple of weeks ago, and now the indoor damage on our home is being repaired. Sections of wall need to be replaced. A couple of ceiling spots need to be cut out and replaced as well. … Continue reading

The Flooring Trend for 2010: Hardwood

If you are looking to update your home flooring this year, you will want to go with the clean classic option of hardwood. People are choosing hardwood floors for several reasons. First: Hardwood floors are easy to clean. Carpet requires frequent spot cleaning and shampooing, especially if you have a busy household. With well finished hardwood floors, you can easily wipe up a spill, and sweep with a dust mop instead of lugging around a heavy vacuum, and occasionally use a damp mop to shine it up. Second: Hardwood floors never go out of style. Hardwood floors have been used … Continue reading

Wood Floors, Carpet, and Area Rugs

In addition to a new roof and a repaired ceiling, we are also in the market for new flooring in the great room. Our floors in the foyer, hallways, and kitchen are wood, and the rooms such as living room, dining room, office, and family room are carpet. Our insurance will only cover the cost of carpet, but we would prefer to have the family room floor done in wood. We will be crunching some numbers to find out if we can swing it. If we stick to replacing the carpet with more carpet we will know that our flooring … Continue reading

Do What You Can and Save Money

If you have been reading my articles over at the Home Blog, you know that we will be having carpet installed in our family room. (If you missed that article, you can click here to read it: Adventures in Carpeting.) We came to the decision after some debate. Carpet will help insulate and warm up the floors (the family room is over a cold crawl space) and make it more comfortable. It is cheaper than installing hardwood floors. The current vinyl floor tiles are literally disintegrating and have become a safety hazard. Beside the risk of tripping over them and … Continue reading

Return of the Area Rug

In a previous blog I told you about how shag carpeting was making a comeback. Personally, I have never been a fan of the furry carpeting, so it’s a trend I wouldn’t consider incorporating into my home’s décor. However, there is another trend in flooring that interests me very much—-area rugs. Research shows that area rugs are growing in popularity and are becoming more than just room “accessories.” An increasing amount of homeowners are using area rugs to divide a room or define a space within a larger room. For example, if you live in a studio apartment, an area … Continue reading

Home Remodeling And Your Pet

In a previous blog I told you about my friend who surveyed her home on her hands and knees looking for safety hazards prior to bringing her new puppies home. It’s a good idea—even better if you are planning to redecorate or remodel your home. Before you hire contractors, experts recommend you look at your home through your pet’s eyes: Floors Before you choose a new floor consider how well it will hold up to scratches? Also, ask yourself how easy is it to clean (should Fido have an “accident”). According to animal experts, tile, linoleum and hardwood floors are … Continue reading
