Your Yard: Outdoor Areas for Pets

Is your pet outside often? Try these tips.

Your Yard

Most pets will develop certain habits over time, such as urinating and defecating in the same area. This can create mess and odor and it's certainly not fun to clean up but it's better than having these elements all over the yard. If your pet doesn't have a spot, it is possible to train your pet to stay in the same area. Another handy way to deal with the problem is to keep a bucket of sand handy. Some people use kitty litter even for dogs. Cover the waste and make it easier to remove (also helps limit odor). Pick it up with a shovel and dispose of it.

The Doghouse

If your dog has a doghouse, be sure to clean it inside and out regularly. Clean it out and apply a layer of cedar shavings to the floor. Doing so helps with odor and helps limit pests, since many don't like the cedar. The material is also good for snuggling into, so when it's cold out add a thicker layer if your dog is going to be outside for any length of time.

If the doghouse is made of wood, and is becoming weathered, consider sanding it down and applying a coat of stain or paint. It will last longer and look better.

Pests

Check your pet's water bowl regularly to make sure no pests are attracted to them. Rinse the water bowl out before refilling. Wash the food bowl out regularly before feeding your dog. Doing both of these things will also help limit pests as will making sure you keep waste cleaned up.

Toys

If your pet has toys, make sure they are kept in one area or container so they don't get run over or damaged with the lawnmower, etc. Make sure the pet's toys are separated from children's toys. Neighbor children may not recognize the difference and may end up playing with the dog's toys, which are often covered with germs from chewing or drooling. Besides, the dog might not like others playing with his toys.

I finally got the time to straighten up the backyard and found that my dog had buried my baby's toys in every corner of the yard.

Oh, my! Our dogs have chewed a few toys but never buried the kids' things.
